In collaboration with the environmental protection organization, the African Ecosystem and Community Development (ARCOS), and the Rwanda Water Resources Agency (RWB) they organized a competition to express the true nature of water resources—one of the rivers of Rwanda.

It will be done to have needed information that will help maintain it properly and avoid dangers that may arise in different situations.

This is the 2024 competition entitled “Water Resources Modeling Hackathon”.

Head of RSF’s Science and Forecasting Department, Segatagara M. Bernard, said the competition would bring together second and third-year students from universities and colleges in Rwanda, who teach resource-related subjects. Nature of water.

He said that this competition aims to avoid the danger of the water of one of the rivers and the infection of the water that is observed these days.

Students participating in the competition will be asked to use information on how the water level of the river fluctuates during different months of the year.

This information will be included in the “software” of the computer program, then the competitor will analyze it and build a method (model) that will be used to manage it correctly based on this information.

The method that he will construct and show how it will provide a better solution than that usually used, is what he will present in the competition against others.

The flows selected are Kamiranzovu, Sebeya Bihongoro, Sebeya Pfunda and Mbirurume.

Segatagara said the methods that will be presented in this competition will be used in planning related to natural water resources.

He said: “This will help those planning water conservation activities, such as public protection, to know the quantity of water. This will help them plan as if the weather changes and the rainfall increases, this will be the one to display them the possible consequences of this increased rainfall.

Director of Development, Operations and Relations at ARCOCS, Ntukamazina Jaqueline, said that as a joint organization concerned with the environment, they decided to join forces with a government agency to jointly find a solution to water conservation.

He said: “We consider youth as the pillar of the country’s development, but it is not easy to work with us alone, as a non-governmental organization. Now we will work with a lot of these competitions, a lot of them and the country will get real information that can help us maintain the flows that we have in the selected country.”

Meanwhile,The first seven students will be rewarded, the first will receive one million Rwandan francs, the second will receive 800 thousand Frw and the third will receive 600 thousand Frw.
The fourth will receive 500 thousand Frw, the next will receive 400 thousand Frw, 300 thousand Frw and 200 thousand Frw.
